Evangelism for democracy

For citizens of the world, there can be no greater cause than freedom and liberty, a few of the founding principles of democracy.

Some presidential administrations have been more fervent evangelists for the spread of democracy than others. The current administration may believe in democracy, but as Joe Klein of Time magazine observes:

Democracy doesn't easily lend itself to evangelism; it requires more than faith. It requires a solid, educated middle class and a sophisticated understanding of law, transparency and minority rights. It certainly can't be imposed by outsiders, not in a fractious region where outsiders are considered infidels. This is not rocket science. It is conventional wisdom among democracy and human-rights activists—and yet the Administration allowed itself to be blinded by righteousness. Why? Because moral pomposity is almost always a camouflage for baser fears and desires.

A well-defined cause is a hallmark strategy for effective evangelism, whether it's for a business, a non-profit, a government or democratic utopia. As Klein's essay illustrates, evangelism is always voluntary, not imposed. Righteousness is a tool of the wicked.
