Mastering media

Another update to our previous post about George Masters, the man behind the terrific homemade iPod ad that's creating all sorts of buzz... In an email, George says he was interviewed by CNBC today for a segment on Tuesday's "Market Minute" program.

He'll also appear on yourmaclife.com Wednesday to talk about his work.

As an example of authentic "homemade advertising," George's work is doing very well for him and Apple, too.

UPDATE: Wired reports on two Mac evangelists who have launched a cool new tool to make your photos look like they came from Apple's iPod marketing campaign.

I don't recall having seen this level of participatory marketing for Apple in quite some time. The company is in perfect tune right now with the market.

Now, if the company were to actively encourage this level of customer engagement we're seeing today, Apple would practically overnight become one of the premiere models of open source marketing. The floodgates of evangelism would spill out into the open.

You're absolutely right. But it'll never happen, at least any time soon. Because they don't get it? Not at all. Apple "gets it" more than most companies. Fact is, their egos don't really allow them to be interested. They think they're smart enough to not need "help".
