Envisioning a future with a phone company that cares
... 8 pounds of unwanted phone books aren't unexpectedly left in a heaping pile at my front door, like they were today.
... 8 pounds of unwanted phone books aren't left in heaping piles in front of my neighbors' doors where, 3 days later, a burglar could easily guess who's home and who isn't.
... The phone company cares enough about the environment that it no longer delivers millions of pounds of unwanted phone books to millions of customers who will just toss them in the trash the next day.
... The phone company thinks about the printing of Yellow Pages as a mass-customization challenge for people who provide permission or request the print version, and discards the outdated and unrealistic "reach" circulation goals.
One day.
Update: In the comments, George envisions a future where:
... the phone company protects my privacy, instead of blatantly listing my number, or charging me $36/year to opt-out
... the phone company corrects their mistakes and apologizes, instead of saying "we made a mistake, but we're not going to charge you"
... the (cell) phone company maintains a signal for an entire conversation
... $19.95 or $29.95 is what I really pay, instead of all of the add-ons and taxes that almost double the final monthly tab
... I no longer pay for the Spanish-American war

Maybe the phone company should " call " you and see if :
1) You want an 8 # baby bell book...
2) You are gonna be home to accept it..
3) You can help them find a way to make $$$ without selling ads...
Yup, and I'm pretty sure they already have my number.

Well...it's more than the phone company that hangs onto those 20lb books that don't get read. It's also old market research associations like the the Marketing Research Association, as I describe here:

Thanks for the pointer, Max. I wonder if someone from the Marketing Research Association will respond to your post?
Where I am from (Provo, UT) the phone book is a 6 lbs waste of paper. And the I am the one that feels guilty for throwing it away and not recycling it.
Yea Max thats a get idea! I also hope someone will respond to your post!
