I agree, astroturfing is horribly offensive. Ironically, it is bloggers and our rush to post new information that have created the window of opportunity for astroturfing. Even old-media types are quick to jump on the latest PR about anything that sounds grass-roots without doing a dilligent search into the background. I think asking the PR community to stop astroturfing will be about as effective as asking politicians to stop pork-barreling and lawyers to stop chasing ambulances. Most professional, like politicians and lawyers, are honest and hardworking and will always suffer from the underhanded work of a few.
Aye, but since politicians (in Congress, at least) have a 98% incumbency rate, it seems social pressure is hardly ever effective. But with their jobs and clients on the line, I think social pressure on PR can be quite effective.
