Media is this message

It's been a pretty crazy ride for "Citizen Marketers" the past few weeks. If you're playing along at home, here are some recent (yup, pretty self-serving) hits in the traditional media as well as the citizen media.

First up: Here's yours truly on ABC News this morning. Why am I squinting through most of the interview? I don't know. Talking to a person you cannot see but only hear in an earpiece is a practiced art, and I'm definitely an amateur.

[Update: A few people have reported they cannot get the ABC video to play, so here's a link to the video on YouTube.]

Next up: It's totally f'n cool to be called a cool friend of the master -- Tom Peters. Read the "cool friends" interview we did for his site.

Speaking of cool, Tim Manners at Cool News of the Day did a nice write-up based on the Wall Street Journal's review of the book.

And cool daddy-o Jack Covert of 800-CEO-READ selected the book as his pick of the month, writing: "Turn on your computer and google your company's name. See what people are saying about you. And when you find those not-so-flattering blog entries (oh yes, they are there if you look hard enough), it might be a strong signal to go buy Citizen Marketers."

The MarketingProfs Book Club kicks into gear soon, and it is reading "Citizen Marketers" as its first book. There's still time to join the club and the discussion.

John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing interviewed us for a terrific podcast about Citizen Marketers, as did Steve Gershik of Marketing Innovation. Both guys are smart and thoughtful hosts.

Then we'd like to extend a thousand thanks to some of the fast readers (and even faster bloggers) who've taken the time to post their thoughts about the book. Here's a sampling:

We totally love Shel Holtz because he's fearless when it comes to keeping PR pros honest. We also love him for his podcast-based book review.

Pete Blackshaw of Nielsen BuzzMetrics is one of the most widely quoted experts about citizen-created content; his book review said: "Loaded with compelling frameworks to help us distill, categorize, interpret and understand what's really taking place behind citizen marketer viral bursts." One answer we didn't explore: sometimes, it's a lot of caffeine and sugar that fuel viral bursts.

Adam Jusko wrote a very nice review for BlogCritics.org, saying the book "has as much to teach entrepreneurs as it has to teach lumbering corporations." Lumbering is a beautifully descriptive word.

Chris Thilk wrote what one of the very first reviews of Citizen Marketers: "It should be on every marketing practitioner's desk. That way, when a nervous boss asks why they should engage and embrace the consumer-generated-content being created they can offer this book up as evidence. It offers a counter-argument to just about any skepticism." Chris, you rawk!

Jason Berberich wrote this rockin' review: "This could be the guide that business needs for navigating the new social world on the web."

Mack Collier is an evangelist's evangelist. If we could, we would grant him special super-powers for this review: "Buy this book. It isn't a marketing book, it's a book about your community of customers. What motivates them, and what inspires them to take action, both on behalf of, and against your brand."

David Armano was another early reviewer, too: "This is one book you'll most likely burn through as opposed to burn." That's hot!

Finally, we were honored by what the folks at Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners had to say, especially since they're helping Mini USA with community-building efforts for the Mini Cooper: "An important addition to the holiday reading list of anyone remotely interested in getting to grips with Marketing 2.0."

Update: Walter Carl is one of the few professors we know of who teaches word of mouth and social media as a college course. He just posted a wonderful critique of the book, highlighting several areas ripe for further exploration. We'll take those as cues for future blog posts and perhaps a second edition. He's also making the book required reading for his students which, to this son of a college professor, is about one of the best compliments imaginable.

Ben

Great to hear that cizizens are busy marketing your book to all and sundry.

Despite being ordered on the 6th December, I am still waiting for my copy to be delivered by Amazon in the UK. Delivery is forecast for the 7th February!

Maybe this is the long-tail of book deliveries.

Graham -- Our publisher said that Amazon UK should be getting books about now (they're typically about a month behind U.S. releases), so here's to hoping your copy shows up in the next week or so.

I learned a lot from reading up on these links and about your books. Will be checking them out one of these days. More success this 2007!

Having been on a few book tours and stayed awake nights wondering if anyone is reading my book, you deserve a million KUDOS! Way to go!

Congratulations! A well deserved exciting week for both of you. Keep it up - the more evangelizing you do on behalf of the new marketing the better it is for the customer and the rest of us working to get these ideas across on the new world of marketing!
