The 1% Rule and Backfence
Citizen journalism-cum-Web 2.0 startup Backfence had an unfortunate layoff this week, releasing 12 of its 18 employees.
Backfence builds websites for local communities, such as Bethesda, Maryland and Skokie, Illinois, by relying on the volunteer participation of those communities' citizens.
Peter Krasilovsky reports that Backfence had a 2% participation rate of its most mature online communities. That jibes with (and supports) the 1% Rule.
