YouTube's 1,972% growth rate
We all know that YouTube was the homecoming queen of 2006, but just how popular was it? Its traffic grew 1,972% in 2006 compared to a year earlier. Some 120 million people visited the site in December 2006, comScore says.
While multimedia sites led the pack, following closely behind were community sites. MySpace and Blogger led the way, growing 159 percent to 90 million worldwide visitors and 90 percent to 93 million worldwide visitors, respectively. That should be of some interest to the people who'll be getting together in March for Community 2.0.
That multimedia and community sites represented the top growth categories during 2006 was partly due to broadband adoption rates reaching critical mass. DSL Forum reports (PDF) that by September 2006, more than 263 million people in the world had broadband at home. Each week, about 1.25 million people in the world were signing up. At that rate, we should see about 65 million additional high-speed surfing households by the end of 2007.
Combine that with existing users and we're talking about a half-billion broadband subscribers worldwide. When broadband is at home, it suddenly becomes a lot easier to take up publishing or broadcasting as a hobby.
