Quote-unquote
At the Community 2.0 conference today, the ever-quotable Craig Newmark on the secret of craigslist:
"The more you think about business as being a community service, the more successful you become. What I've told newspapers -- when they've asked -- is that newspapers used to be in the community service business. Now they've been positioned as cash cows."

Wow. That's a truly great quote. So obvious. So widely applicable. And so easily forgotton in a business climate where shareholder value and quarterly results are too often the be all end all.
It's in line with the famous 'people buy from people'. Many executives should think about these quotes instead of crunching numbers in spreadsheets and pinging emails the whole day.
Craig is a folk-hero of sorts. I applaud him for not caving into Wall Street and following the golden rule and not the almighty buck. His humility and self-deprecating sense of humor is remarkable, too.
