Time to get weird

Keep Austin Weird
"Keep Austin Weird" is a saying that decorates t-shirts and cars across central Texas. In a world blacktopped with Six Sigma this, and metric-driven conformity that, keeping things weird is a sentiment we can embrace.

That partly explains why we'll be packing up our Chicago-based World Headquarters and moving the pews to fantastically weird Austin, Texas, at the end of this month. The other reason would be that it's warmer there than it is here in Chicago. Of course, we're moving to Texas at precisely its warmest but that's the way things often turn out.

Before we hit the road, Willie-style, we'll be hanging out at one of our favorite Chicago spots, Cru Cafe and Wine Bar, on Thursday, June 14 if you want to join us and some local friends. We'll be there from 5:30 PM until 8-ish. Cru is at 25 E. Delaware in Chicago, about a block away from Rush Street.

As a native Texan myself, I welcome you to the promised land! Great city. Great choice. And some of the best music and Tex-Mex around.

You'll love it there.

Austin welcomes you!!! And if you think it's warm at the end of June, just wait until August gets here... ;-)

If we can offer favorite restaurants, boutiques or music venues, just say the word...

Long time reader, first time poster. I love the blog!

I'm originally from Austin and am now living in Chicago! Keep Austin Weird is more than a saying, it's a mantra that stretches from the mayor to the students to the organic farmers to the dried out hippies. Take me with you!

Welcome to Texas. I think we're reaching critical mass of our own literary scene here. Ray Bard, John Moore, Meg LaBorde.
More authors are always welcome!

It will take you about a year to get use to the heat. If you live through this first summer, the next one will be bearable.

I'm so jealous! Austin is one of those places I've always wanted to go. Enjoy it and take in some great music!

Welcome to Texas! My wife and I moved from Chicago to Austin in the summer of 2000. As native Texans we both love it here, but we do miss being in Chicago - it's a great city.

We hope you love Austin and Texas the same way we do.

Best of luck on your move and we hope to see you in town soon!

You guys are gonna love Austin, and Austin's gonna love you. I spend a great deal of time there, being that my home office is located there. Great people, great town... great FOOD! Wishing you the best in your new adventure - hopefully we'll connect sometime on one of my many trips.

Best,
Michele

Austin is cool, but don't be shocked when it gets downright cold in winter. It may not hit sub freezing, but you'll see temps in the 30's sometimes. The freakiest weather I've ever experienced was in Texas over the two years I lived there.

You'll have plenty of time to find out just how hot it can get here, as the real heat kicks in around late July and August. There's a reason Texans are "slow" and that's to prevent heat exhaustion.

And if you're like me, you'll get acclimated to the heat just in time to find the first winter here uncomfortable. I moved here from Boston over ten years ago, I wasn't expecting 40-50 to be shocking to me, but it was. Back in Boston, I thought nothing of keeping my coat open in 30F weather if it wasn't raining. Part of the wierd, I guess.

Welcome to Austin! If you need suggestions on where to go, what to eat, and more, check oout the Austin Chronicle.

Have you gone to the Drive Thru Liquor Store, the Party Barn? They used to (it's been a few years since I've been to Austin)have t-shirts that said "Get it in your car". Very tasteful. I L-O-V-E Austin.

I departed Austin in '83 and returned three years ago. I'm loving the people and the weather and everything in between. Welcome. Let's share a margarita when you arrive and compare notes.
